Geiranger

We were told they could get up to five boats in here at a time. Fortunately, there were only two the day we were there - one medium and one extra large. Geiranger has a permanent population of 250 - plus several hundred thousand tourists every summer (not all at once).

The waterfront is packed with shops and activities for the hordes that get off the boats - it reminded me of Ketchikan. Souvenirs, food, t-shirts, and lots of troll swag. There was a steady stream of smaller fjord boats and bus tours. You could rent small one-person electric cars, bicycles, and kayaks.

There are only two roads in and out, both steep narrow mountain roads that are periodically closed in the winter. In the summertime, they are crowded with tourists in rental cars, tour buses, and even occasional trucks, all trying to pass on narrow hairpin turns. A few days later, we were talking to a truck driver who had driven buses in Geiranger for many years. He said some summers he would do two runs up to Dalsnibba and back every day.
