Aurlandsfjellet is "The Snow Road" between Aurland and Lærdal, each located on separate arms of the large Sognefjord. It winds 40kms up and over the mountains - and lies 3 kms vertically above the more direct route, the 24km Lærdal Tunnel (at 15 miles, it is the longest road tunnel in the world).
The road winds across a barren alpine landscape, all the bleaker when in the clouds. But it made for some cool views into the surrounding valleys. It was nice that we had plenty of other opportunities on this trip to cross similar landscapes in nicer weather - such as the next day's ride across the Jutenheim Mountains.
One of our stops was at the Vedahaugane viewpoint, which includes a short path to Mark Dion's strange bear-in-a-cave installation.
