Balestrand

Balestrand was our base for two nights. The day in between was largely taken up by an all-day trip across the fjord to Flam - but we were still able to enjoy breakfasts at our hotel and dinners nearby. We ate the first night at the Art Cafe down near the water. The second night we were able to make it back in time to eat at the Ciderhuset up the hill. Both were good, but the latter was great.

The town is like many in this area - perched along the edge of the fjord in one of the rare places where the slope isn't quite so steep. The very imposing Kviknes Hotel is the main feature of the waterfront - we walked by, but we were staying elsewhere.

Our room had a great view of the Sognefjord, although the skies stayed pretty gray for our entire stay. The fjord is the longest in Norway and pretty much the longest anywhere, if you ignore Greenland. The fjord is more than a thousand meters deep in this section. But for some reason, I kept thinking that we were staying on a lake. The ocean seemed a long way away and the tides weren't too obvious.
