Bryggen

Bryggen refers to the old wharf and the line of warehouses along the east side of Vågen Harbor (one of Bergen's several waterways). Although the current version dates to the early 18th century (the place keeps burning down), the concept goes back to the middle ages. Bergen got its start a thousand years ago and emerged as a significant trading center within the Hanseatic League during the 14th century.

The warehouses have found new uses and form a colorful backdrop to the waterfront, which is packed with shops, restaurants, and, at least this time of year, visitors.

There were several large sailing ships moored along the wharf during our visit (they left by the end, so I guess they're not permanent fixtures -- and not just for show, either).
