Flåmsbana

The one-hour train trip from Flåm up the valley to Myrdahl, the junction with the mainline from Oslo to Bergen, is one of the steepest standard rail lines in the world. No cables, no cogs, not a funicular. There are several tunnels, including one that turns around on itself inside the mountain. And great views of the valley as it climbs to something a little short of 3000'.

The trains stop in each direction in the middle to pass the one going in the other direction. And they stop in both directions at the Kjosfossen waterfall where everyone has ten minutes to unload, run across the platform, and take a selfie in front of the waterfall.

The highlight of the falls is when a Huldra (sort of a Norwegian mountain forest version of a Mediterranean siren, and yes, at least the one we saw was blond) appears in front of the waterfall and sings some sort of alluring melody to seduce and distract tourists so they don't make it back to the train before it pulls out. It was pretty corny. But clearly a big hit among many of the tourists.
