Dingle (Part One)

I'm going to split Dingle between two posts, though somewhat arbitrarily. And that's just the town of Dingle itself, since there will be several more posts from around the Dingle Peninsula. None of which is very far away.

We spent two nights in Dingle. This is a wonderful little town which makes you wonder why tourism and top ten lists and heavily promoted charm haven't ruined it. Can a place with touted by everyone as an authentic Irish experience still be authentic? But yet it seems to work - at least to us tourists. Maybe it feels different to the locals.

Dingle is a fishing town on a sheltered bay on the south shore of a narrow peninsula, but it has a long history as a significant port (dating to Norman times). It's an area that prides itself on its heritage, yet seems to chafe a little at national efforts to enforce this heritage. It is still called Dingle by most folks, after all, rather than An Daingean.

These photos include the Harbor itself and Conor Pass, a few miles up into the hills above town.
