Frogner Park

Frogner Park was a ten minute walk from our hotel through a shady (this was important) residential neighborhood. The Vigeland Installation extends along a broad corridor up a long hill in the middle of the park. The walkways are lined with statues, there are fountains built around statues, and there was even a spectacular monolith of sculpted naked human forms. While most were grey granite figures and bronzes, there were also reliefs and sculpted metal gates.

The entire project was conceived of and populated by Gustav Vigeland, mainly in the 1930s and 40s. It is not surprising why this is such a huge draw for both locals and tourists. The sculptures, all nude, are whimsical, thoughtful, provocative, and convey a wonderful sense of humanity. They were a nice contrast to classical sculpture. And there was sexuality, but without titillation.
