This blog remains in hibernation (see previous post), but I thought it would be a good place to let a few longtime followers know about an upcoming adventure.

These photos are from last week's three day ride from Portland to Seattle.

In two weeks, I will fly back to Brunswick, Maine, and then I plan to ride my bike back to Seattle. The idea is that I will be back across the Cascades by mid-October and bad weather. I suppose this will be a little different than the normal road trip - much longer, with more time for introspection and less opportunity for side trips.

I won't be posting here, but I will be documenting the trip on both Instagram and Tumblr, which are both much easier when on the road with nothing but a smart phone.

Instagram is for sharing photos and brief notes. It offers very little structure, but it's easy for me to post and it facilitates interaction for those who want it. By the way, I love knowing people are watching, but I tend not to acknowledge or reciprocate very well.
Instagram (Hugh@gravelbeach)

Tumblr. Hopefully, I can produce an interesting record of the trip. There will probably be too much information for some folks; too little for others. And I have no idea whether I can maintain any consistency over the course of the trip. But the focus will be primarily on daily updates (as best I can) and photos.
BikeTrip2019: Backroads and Bikepaths

I may or may not continue to stay active on the other Tumblr blogs (see links in sidebar). The main focus for almost two months will be on safely completing the bike trip and while I want to document it and to share it, I don't want those tasks to diminish the experience.
Observant followers of this blog may have noted that the last post was back in November and it's now almost February. It's not that there haven't been things to post. Rather, the author (also editor, proofreader, publisher, and photographer) has been struggling with some existential questions (about the blog's existence, not the author's) and has sort of decided, by indecision and inaction, to put it on hold for a while, until he can figure out whether it has a future.

Meanwhile, I'm posting pictures on my Tumblr blogs, which is much easier and focuses more on the photos than on the rambling backstory.
The 971 posts on this blog will still be here for those looking for ideas for places to visit. Maybe if I'm bored, I'll add some sort of map. And maybe some more posts. I don't know.
Fort Worden is located where it is because of its strategic location at the entrance to Puget Sound, where it, Fort Flagler on Marrowstone, and Fort Casey on Whidbey created a pretty imposing array of gun batteries, had any unfriendly ships tried to sneak in (I guess none ever did). The forts all date to the late 1800s and early 1900s (I think Fort Ebey on Whidbey is of a later vintage).
It's been a State Park since the early 1970s, managed now for museums, camping, lodging, as well as a variety of events and festivals. It's a great venue for workshops and small conferences (my excuse to spend two days recently). The bluffs offers great views of the Cascades to the east, from Baker to Rainier, of Vancouver Island and the San Juans to the north, and of the Olympics in the west. It's also got some neat beaches (and some interesting coastal geologic conundrums).
I think this is a pretty common name for hiking and climbing routes in similar settings, but it certainly fits this place well. North of Old Snowy, the PCT follows the crest of a jagged ridge for a mile or two. I followed it to Elk Pass, before turning around and heading back.
The trail is pretty good (though sections were covered in packed snow) and while it drops off steeply in both directions, it's not terribly precarious. I've found myself increasingly sensitive about exposed heights in recent years (Vors Fleslers Kirke), but even the snowy switchbacks down from Old Snowy didn't bother me much.
It might be interesting in some places were one to encounter pack horses, or converging packs of goats, but there was only one other party and they didn't go the whole distance.
The regular PCT goes up and over the shoulder of Old Snowy - but there is an alternate trail designated for pack animals that cuts across the broad talus on the mountains northern slope. It's an easy enough route, but there were rocks constantly rattling down the slope as the sun warmed the icy slopes.
Mount Gilbert is the highest point in the Goat Rocks, at 8200' (it's the ragged peak in the earlier Goat Rocks post). At 7930', Old Snowy isn't quite so high, but is still a significant landmark. These photos capture the mountain from a number of different directions. Old Snowy had several large patches of old snow, and there was new snow in the shadows and along many sections of the trail.

The PCT crosses a high shoulder about 300' short of the summit - which is as close as I got early Saturday morning. A couple of women passed me and summited 25 minutes later, but the icy rocks, their apparent difficulty in route-finding, and maybe my caution as a solo hiker, all convinced me that I didn't need to try it.
By mid-afternoon, when I was heading back to camp, there were more people heading up (some poorly equipped, some with dogs, and some who actually looked like they knew what they were doing). But again, I thought better of it, or chickened out, depending on your perspective.
Snowgrass Flats was home for two nights. I camped in one of the many great sites scattered around the junction of the Snowgrass Trail with the PCT. The only drawback was that this late in the season, there's not much flowing water. Oh, and another drawback, what water I did have froze in the bottles at night. I think it must have been around 20 at dawn. And windy at night. Particularly Sunday morning.
The roughly five mile trail in was in good condition. And since the trailhead is around 4500', the elevation gain isn't bad. Snowgrass is a great base camp for exploring the more exposed areas of Old Snowy and the Knife Edge, which I'll get to later.
The theme of the last few weeks has been beautiful fall weather in the Cascades. And the next few posts are more of the same. The challenge has been deciding which subset of photos to actually post. And in this case I've split the three day trip into at least four posts and included more photos than I probably should have.
I had never been to Goat Rocks. I'm not even sure when I was last in Packwood (the closest I can recall was Ohanapecosh with D back in 2011). Unlike my Olympia friends, I never go to White Pass. But by 11:00 on Friday morning, I was headed up the trail to Snowgrass Flats (I parked at Berry Patch, since that's where I would return early Sunday afternoon).
The Goat Rocks are the remnants of an old volcano, roughly half way between Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams. The crumbly volcanic rocks rise well above 7000' in places, way above timberline and offering views of just about everything. The Pacific Crest Trail runs down their spine - precipitously so in places.

The days were pleasant, the nights were bitter, and the colors were great. There was snow from last year, and snow from last week. There were goats, but they were far away.
We hadn't been up to Mount Baker in a long time. It's a long drive from Seattle and other mountains seem more convenient, but I'd forgotten what an impressive spot this is - particularly on a beautiful fall day.
It rained on Friday and it was scheduled to rain on Sunday (it did). But the forecast for Saturday looked pretty good. M will be grading papers next weekend so it seemed like a great day to go somewhere. Of course, we weren't the only ones with the same idea and the parking lot was overflowing with tourists, locals (I consider Bellingham local to Mount Baker), and a few of us Seattle types.

What a day! We made it back to Burlington for dinner at the Train Wreck and were home by eight.
I think this is Kalsbeek Farm in Acme. On Route 9 along the South Fork of the Nooksack, just upstream of Van Zandt. On the way to Mount Baker.
It wasn't part of the plan, but what plan there was allowed for unplanned stops at farm stands and corn mazes. The corn maze was a little threadbare - maybe a little late, or maybe a poor year for corn - but that made it pretty easy to find our way out. We avoided the pumpkins, and the Halloween-themed muffins, but enjoyed the break in our long morning drive.
Saturday was a nice fall day to go for a long walk in the mountains. The Ira Spring trailhead is only a little more than an hour from the house and I got there by 8AM, before the main lot filled up (as usual, the cars were parked a quarter mile down the road by the time I left at 2PM).
Seven years ago, D and I hiked up to Bandera and Mason Lake (Bandera: June 2011). That time, it was pretty early in the season and the lake was still snowed in. This time, the snow was long gone, replaced by fall colors.
The trail to Mason Lake is very good and relatively fast, despite the climb. The trail on up to Mount Defiance is steeper, particularly the final stretch up its southwest ridge. The clouds were beginning to come in, but the temperatures were perfect.
Some of the more charismatic fauna (grizzlies, tigers) were hiding, but many were not, and I wasn't counting. I still find it neat to know that such a range of critters live within less than a mile of our house (but also happy that they aren't allowed to range too freely).
The last bike ride of my 50s was a big group ride that began and ended on the Edmonds ferry, but that took in Kingston, Hansville, Port Gamble, and Poulsbo. I guess there were close to 1000 riders - which made sense looking at the crowds on the ferry, but was harder to judge when strung out along 50+ miles of North Kitsap countryside.
I was on the first ferry at 8:50 and assume a majority of others were, too. I made it back to Kingston with enough time to grab ice cream at Mora before joining the crowd waiting for the 2:30 boat.
From 2000 until 2011, the strange building (Frank Gehry) below the Space Needle housed the Experience Music Project. But then EMP became MoPOP (The Museum of POP Culture), which I guess reflected the fact that its theme was broader than just music.
But EMP or MoPOP, we had never gone. Maybe we were locals too cheap to buy tickets to a major Seattle tourist attraction. Or just middle-aged folks out of touch or unengaged with either music or anything related to popular culture.

But last week, we joined a large crowd inspired by a viral Facebook promotion that offered free admission. We had to pay extra to see the Marvel exhibit, but Pearl Jam and Frodo's sword came with the deal.
Dad wasn't too pleased when I came home one day with comic books bought with my allowance (apparently financial independence had to wait a couple of years until middle school and a paper route). Maybe I never would have gotten interested in comic books anyway (I guess I watched TV versions of some of them). I was middle-aged when Marvel got rediscovered by the modern movie business and I just wasn't really paying attention. A couple of years ago, I began watching Jessica Jones on Netflix, but most of what I know about Marvel characters I learn from overheard conversations among 20-something baristas

I doubt I'm going to go out and start buying comic books, but I think I need to go back and pick up another season of Jessica Jones on Netflix and maybe watch Black Panther.
Dad grew up in Glen Ellyn and his family was always talking about places like Geneva and Batavia and Elgin. I suppose they were the end of the commuter and trolley lines. And the Fox River sort of marked (sort of still does) the western edge of Chicago and the beginning of the prairies.

We left Madison in the morning, but our flight didn't leave O'Hare until late afternoon, so we had some time to explore. I had always wanted to see this string of towns along the river, so we left the Tollway in Elgin and worked our way south.
We stopped and walked a little along the river in downtown St. Charles. The river was running pretty full (not that I have much idea of what normal looks like). The bridge is nicely framed by the Hotel Baker on the west and the Art Deco (1940 Moderne?) Municipal Building on the east bank.
It wasn't part of the plan, but we stopped again south of town at Mt. St. Mary Park and wandered through the outdoor sculptures. I would have liked more time to explore Geneva and Batavia, but we needed to get back to the airport and weren't sure how bad traffic might be.
Devil's Lake State Park is an hour north of Madison, up near Baraboo. It's actually got some fairly sharp relief, which distinguishes it from the more gently rolling hills of the rest of southern Wisconsin.
D's been coming up here now and then to run up the rock steps to the top of the bluff and this was a nice chance for us to spend an afternoon in pretty spot, get some exercise, and check out some of his world.
There's some neat geology - the lake lies in a gorge between rock cliffs comprised of maroon quartzite that's more than a billion and a half years old. The valley has a much more recent history, some tied to the last glaciers. I added a little more about this over on Gravel Beach.
The primary reason for our long weekend in Madison was to visit D, but we took advantage of the fact that his apartment is near a large mini-golf course and a frozen custard shop. A couple of years ago (Madison: April 2016), we tried out the indoor course, but this time we took advantage of the nice weather and played outside.
M found us a nice place for dinner Saturday night where D and I could celebrate our respective birthdays (his was a couple of weeks earlier, mine a couple of weeks later) with good steaks. Then M had found us an Escape Room (something new for us), where we spent a frantic hour just barely getting out of the cargo hold of a jetliner sinking in the North Atlantic (no photos, and I won't share the details, other than our group really needed the hints).
Seattle's waterfront lies on top of what was once a gravelly beach at the bottom of a steep, forested bluff. It doesn't look much like that today, but it still offers amazing views west over Elliott Bay.

The shoreline was developed for very practical uses. Loading and unloading ships and transferring cargo - to wagons, to trains, and to trucks. Before Alaskan Way, there were several rail lines paralleling the shore on trestles over the beach, but these were later filled in, the seawall was constructed, and the current version of the road took shape. Highway 99 and it's gray, double-decked viaduct came later, not because it served the waterfront, but because it was a convenient path for a highway through the city.

Decades later, the waterfront has evolved, as has our collective vision of what an urban shoreline should look like. The viaduct is still a quick way through town, and I'm not the only one who has enjoyed wonderful views of sunsets over the Olympics while stuck in northbound dinner-hour traffic, but it's ugly, it's noisy, and it cuts off the city from it's spectacular waterfront.

And then, in 1989, came the pictures of the Cypress Street Viaduct in Oakland after the Loma Prieta earthquake and we learned that the same thing might happen here. Since then, we've seen other cities tear down waterfront freeways and create beautiful, vibrant public spaces. It takes money. And engineering. And a few mistakes. But by early next year it will be gone. Traffic will flow in a new tunnel underground and over the next few years, Alaskan Way will be transformed into something really special.
Every few Sundays in the summer, Seattle shuts down Lake Washington Boulevard to cars between Mount Baker Park and Seward Park and promotes walking and biking. We hadn't done this in decades, probably since D was very young, and this was something we could both do together.
I've been riding a lot this past year, mainly long rides on my not-quite-so-new Surly, and much of it stuff M would have little interest in attempting. It was fun to get out for a more relaxing ride on a beautiful day, with company.
I've used this title for many posts, probably almost every year, since the lake is such a fundamental part of our stay on Saltspring. We don't play in the water as much as we did when D was younger, but I sit at the beach with my coffee early in the morning while it's still quiet. And M joins the others to play games and chat in the afternoon. The lake is always within site of the cabins and we can always hear people in the water or on the beach in the background.
It's nice that the view across the lake is of protected forest on the steep eastern slope of Channel Ridge and that because the lake is also Ganges' water supply, there are strict rules about motiorized watercraft. The only exception is small electric trolling motors and the launch that accompanies the rowing shells when they're practicing. We occasionally hear cars or equipment across the lake, or a seaplane heading into Ganges, but for the most part, the noise is mainly the kids playing on the rafts.
The top of the main summit in Mount Maxwell Provincial Park is Baynes Peak. Go figure. I guess it's a compromise between the two different names that have historically been used to describe this rocky 580m (1900') hill on Salt Spring Island.

We've driven up a few times in the past, but this was my first time to try it on the bike. It starts with the steep, busy road out of Ganges, but then keeps going, albeit in a rolling, up and down and up again way. The last mile or two is gravel - in some places both steep and loose - and I walked a few short sections, but eventually I made it to the viewpoint. It was still hazy, though not as bad as earlier in the week.

It was much quicker going back down, though somehow I managed to break by chain a mile or so from the cabin. But by then, walking sort of felt like a nice break.
I walked around Fulford twice this trip, once on the bike ride over to Victoria and again a few days later with M. The village is always colorful, but it was hard to capture it this year because of the thick smoke and haze. The only way these photos worked was by shooting away from the sun and then trying to filter out some of the haze in post-processing (the picture below shows the problem).
Not for the first time, I'd like to point out that I have no idea whether it's Saltspring Island or Salt Spring Island, but as far as I can tell, the spellings are pretty interchangeable. Either way, it's much the same place as when we first came up in 1997.
Every year (at least since 2006), I post a few pictures, often under similar titles (Salt Spring, Ganges, St, Mary Lake, Fulford), though I've tried pretty hard to seek out a few new places on each visit. This post is simply a few pictures from this year that I liked, but didn't fit well in the other entries.
I believe there are now almost 50 posts from Salt Spring on this blog:
hshipman: Saltspring Island
And a bunch more over on Gravel Beach:
Gravel Beach: Saltspring

I assume we'll be back again next year.
M and I swung by Burgoyne Bay on the way back from Fulford and the Bread Lady at the south end of the island. The dirt road down to the red Government Dock is lined with old cars that I assume belong either to folks moored out in the Bay or who occasionally motor over from Vancouver Island.
The smoke never completely went away during the week, but some days were better than others. In Ganges on Thursday, the haze was less and what little there was I was able to reduce further on the computer back home.
I went into town early for coffee at Talia, then wandered around the harbor with the new camera. The colors were bright, the sky was partly blue, and the whites were really white - not orangish brown like they'd been most of the week. I've probably overdone the contrast a little in these shots, but was having fun playing with the exposure after the fact.
This month, after years of waffling, I finally got a digital SLR (Canon Rebel T6i) and am migrating my photo library from Picasa to Lightroom. The pictures may not be any better, but at least I'm paying more for them! And I'm still taking most of them with my iPhone or my small Canon SX720.
